Week 2 in College Heights

College Heights has proven to be a very blessed ward and area. I am loving all the people we are working with and teaching!

We have an investigator named Margie who is planning to get baptized soon. She just needs to be married first. She has been living with her "husband" for 30 years and they have 7 children together, but they just never officially got married. To some it may seem silly at this point to say they need to get married.  They have a stable life and family together. But at the same time the Lord has set standards for a reason, and it really does matter to Him whether we are obeying all of his commandments. As we show him that we are willing to submit to his will rather than our own, and to follow what he says no matter what, he is able to bless us immeasurably more than when we disregard the things he has told us to do. Margie is excited! She knows she went about things the wrong way, and she keeps saying how she is just doing everything backwards - family first, then marriage! After they get married, which should be in the next week or two, she will be ready to be baptized!

I wish I could remember more of this week. I know we did a lot, but whenever I sit down at the computer to write everything down, I can't seem to remember anything! The week just flew by so fast that everything seems to be a blur!

Love you all!

Adventures in Bakersfield

Change is always an adventure.

Last Tuesday I drove to Bakersfield and had to say goodbye to my dear companion Sister Larsen. She is home with her family in Colorado now. She is an amazing person and I miss her so much!

I then found my new companion, Sister Alderman, who I already knew from the MTC. We found our car, packed all our stuff inside (if college has taught me anything, it's how to play Tetris with luggage and small cars) and headed on our merry way. Well, that was the plan anyway. When we got in the car we discovered that we had no map and no GPS, just the address of our apartment. Since we were both going to a new area that neither of us had been to before, this created a problem...

One of our zone leaders had a GPS that he wasn't using, which he let us borrow. YAY Problem solved!....Until we put our address in and found that the GPS was so out of date that it didn't know where our apartment was. Luckily we were still in a church parking lot with a ton of other missionaries, and after asking around for a while, we found a sister who had lived in our apartment previously and she gave us directions on how to get there.

And so we were off, trying to make our way from West Bakersfield to East Bakersfield. We were going the right direction. We were. But then we somehow missed the freeway and ended up, well, very lost. So we drove around Bakersfield for a while, trying to find the freeway and not wanting to admit that we needed help. But we did. We finally stopped and asked for directions and FINALLY made it to the right road and were able to make it to our apartment (asking for directions helpswhat a concept!)

So there we were, in our new apartment. We loaded all of our stuff out of the car and wanted to get to work right away, so we found the Area Book and started looking through it. (Every missionary area has a big binder that we call the Area Book. It is basically a record of all the people that past missionaries have taught, with information on the area boundaries, and the ward, and a bunch of other stuff.) Well, we opened the area book only to find that it was a complete mess. And was missing a lot of information. Such as a map of the area. And a ward directory. And the address of the church building. At least the phone that we were given had a bunch of contacts in it.....for a different ward.

So, there we were. We didn't know where our area was. We didn't know who was in the ward. We didn't have any phone numbers. We literally couldn't do anything.

So what do missionaries do when they don't know what to do? They go tracting. So, we just drove to where we were pretty sure our area was and knocked on some doors. Hey, if we found anyone that turned out to be in a different set of missionaries area, we would just hand them over as a referral.

So that was Tuesday. The only thing we were given was the number of our bishop. (But just his phone number, not even his name.) We tried to contact him but he never responded (come to find out a few days later that it was because he was in a COMA in the ICU.)

We have a map now. And a ward directory. It was a rough week but we finally know where things are and can start getting to work!

Our area is pretty poor, but I love it. Poor people are way more open to talking to us about the gospel. You also meet a lot of interesting people. And crazy people. On Saturday we met a guy named Jimmy. He had just gotten out of jail and was telling us how God helped him get over his meth addiction and how he was trying to find his friend's house so that he could pick up his Bible. He also taught us a rap that he wrote about being a gangsta for Jesus. It was legit.

As crazy as this week has been, it has taught me a lot. Like, even when you are lost and don't think you can do anything, you just have to work anyway, and you will be led in the right direction. We have to put forth the effort, and take those steps forward, even when we don't know where we are going (this applies literally as well as metaphorically.)

The gospel is true!
Love you all,

Goodbye Lancaster, Hello Bakersfield!

Well, we got to transfer calls on Saturday, and found out that I am getting TRANSFERRED!!! I am going to be leaving Lancaster 1st ward and moving to College Heights ward in Bakersfield. My companion will be Sister Alderman, who was in the same district as me in the MTC, so I already know how AWESOME she is!! :)

It is somewhat sad to be leaving my first area! I have been here for 4 months, and have really gotten attached to people. But I also know that it is time for me to move on to somewhere else.

I am leaving TOMORROW and have been going crazy trying to pack and clean and say goodbye to people. It is tough. I am excited and stressed and sad all at the same time. But I know the Lord is placing me where I need to be right now. I can't wait to see what will happen in College Heights!

Love you all!

:)

This week has been weird. We talked to a lot of really strange people. I don't even know what was going on with that, but we just had a lot of odd conversations.

It's funny how people think that we can't hear them through their door. We can. Especially when the door isn't closed. We went by to see Xavier, one of our investigators that we had just met this week. His brother answered the door, and then went to go get Xavier. We heard him tell his brother to tell us that he was in the shower. Needless to say we dropped him. But, we ended up teaching his brother the Restoration, so we still might see Xavier again if we continue to teach his brother.

We are teaching a lady named Bertha. She is the cutest little Mexican woman! She takes care of her mother full-time, because her mother had a stroke and half of her body is paralyzed. Her Dad was a member of the church, but her parents got divorced when she was young so she never went to church with him or got baptized. She has had a lot of very spiritual experiences throughout her life, and wants to know more about the church and what she needs to do to get baptized! I have a feeling she will continue to progress, as long as she can read the Book of Mormon. She told us that she tried to start reading it several times, but kept falling asleep as she was reading. I understand what that's like thoughit has definitely happened to me before. It is hard to read when you're tired.

Have a great week!

February...what?

This week there were a lot of ups and downs with the weather. For a few days it was so nice that I didn't bring a jacket with me. Then yesterday, it was freezing cold and raining, and there were flurries of snow mixed with the rain. Not at all what I expected when coming to California! But it turned out to be a tender mercywe were knocking on this lady's door, and she was busy cooking dinner but she let us inside because she felt sorry for us being outside in the cold and rain. We got to teach her and her son the Restoration, and she is interested in reading the Book of Mormon!

Other than that we've had a great week! We still visit Richard every week to re-teach him the missionary discussions and to read the Book of Mormon with him. He is such a funny old man! He is loving the Book of Mormon! We read the first three chapters of 1 Nephi with him and asked him to keep reading on his own throughout the week. He told us he would, because he was so anxious to know what happens next, then he flipped through the whole book with his finger and told us that he might just read the whole thing! It was pretty great :)

I love being a missionary of the Lord! And I love all of you!
