A Week of Miracles

This week has been super busy, and so much better than last week was.

First, Zone Conference. Our entire zone met together and received instruction from our mission president on how we can improve as missionaries. That was pretty normal. But, this Zone Conference, we got Tiwi. What is Tiwi you ask? Well, it is a devise that they installed in all of the mission cars, and it's job is to monitor how safely we are driving. If you are speeding, Tiwi will tell you to slow down. If you are driving aggressively, Tiwi will tell you. It will even remind you to buckle your seat belt. Basically, if you are a bad driver you will be chastised by a computer. And, the results are sent back to the mission's vehicle coordinator at the end of every transfer. If any missionary does not have a good driving record, their driving privileges could potentially be suspended or revoked. I am personally grateful for Tiwi (of course, I am not the one driving) since it will make missionaries much safer drivers.

This week we also started to teach some pretty amazing people.

Dru:
Dru is a miracle. He is 16, and started coming to mutual and church with one of his friends. After his first time at mutual, he went up to the Bishop and asked him what he needed to do to be baptized.  ?!?!!? Things like that never happen! Anyway, so the young men gave him a copy of the Book of Mormon on Sunday, and we had our first official lesson with him on Tuesday. We asked him if he had a chance to read any of it yet. "I finished it last night"  ???!?!?!!!!! We thought he was kidding, but he was dead serious. He had read the entire thing in less than 24 hours. Did he understand most of it? Of course not, he was speed reading. But he has already started his second reading, this time going a little slower so he can absorb more of it. Dru is so prepared—he had an experience when he was younger that left him without any doubt that God is real and that he loves him—and he is hungry to know everything about the Gospel. But with any person who is so prepared for the Gospel, Satan really wants to put a stop to it. This weekend Dru had the flu really bad and had to go to the hospital, and so wasn't able to come to church AND his grandma, who has custody of him and who had originally said that he could take the lessons and get baptized, has changed her mind and says that she won't give her permission for him to get baptized. We are not yet sure what happened to change her mind, but it might be tricky to reverse the situation. Please keep him in your prayers, and pray that his grandma's heart will be softened.

Loetta:
Today is Loetta's 90th birthday. She is super sassy and funny and smokes like a chimney, AND is super excited to read the Book of Mormon and learn about the Gospel. She was supposed to come to church yesterday, but the poor thing was up all night and morning throwing up. But, when she recovers she wants to come and eventually get baptized (we haven't had a chance to tell her she has to quit smoking first, but we'll get around to that.) When we taught her about the Restoration of the Gospel and how there's a prophet on the earth today, she got super excited. We asked her how it would make her feel to know that these things were true, and she said "Jubilant!"

Robert/Emily:
Robert is 9 and hasn't been baptized yet. His mom Emily is a less active member who moved into the ward a few months ago. Let me tell you the miracle story of how we met Emily. It was Tuesday night and we went on splits—Sister Alderman and Sister Hertig were teaching a lesson to a recent convert, and I went with a sister in the ward to go visit some members who had recently moved in (being in a trio has its perks—divide and conquer!) Anyway, we went out and knocked on four different people's houses, and not a single one was home or able to visit with us. I was feeling super discouraged, since we still had the whole evening left and only one more person on our list. So, we go to the last person, Emily. Funny enough, a couple from the ward was just leaving her apartment (turned out to be her home teachers who had come to meet her as well.) They left, and we came inside. She started talking to us and then suddenly broke down in tears. She then proceeded to tell us her whole life story, sharing with us some things that she said she had never told anyone before. There had been times in her life when she was living the Gospel and had been happy, but there were other times when she had made some poor choices that caused her a lot of suffering. The past few weeks she has been in the depths of despair, still depressed and suffering greatly. She told us that she had been praying the past few days for God's help, and then that night her home teachers and us both showed up at her door. Sometimes there are moments when we are permitted to see how much God has his hands in the details of our lives—this was one of those moments. All of the houses we had gone to first were meant to be empty, because Heavenly Father needed to use us to answer Emily's prayers. And he placed me, specifically me, there in her house to share with her some personal things that no one else could have, which she needed to hear.  It is no coincidence the way things worked out that night. God has a master plan, and we are sometimes the angels he sends to people's aid. I did not feel at the time like I was being led anywhere. I did not feel the Spirit any more than usual. It was just a normal Tuesday night going out to visit people. And yet God was guiding us to be in a specific place at a specific time for a specific purpose. God often uses us as tools to bless the lives of others, and sometimes he allows us to witness the impact that we have. He is in charge—and we need to be obedient in order to allow Him to use us to accomplish His work.

I told Emily that this moment in her life is a moment in which God has allowed her to be very humbled. Now is the opportunity to turn back to him, to turn back to the Gospel, and to find the peace that only Christ and his Atonement can give. She wants to, and her son has been asking to get baptized, so now we are going to teach him, to both help him prepare for baptism and help her get back on the right path.

Anyway, that has been my week. It has been quite something. There were many moments when I was reminded why I came out on a mission in the first place. God will always find ways to accomplish his work with or without us, but we are blessed enough to be given the opportunity to participate in that work. I am so grateful for the opportunity to serve Heavenly Father and to be involved in the work of salvation, and to see the miracles that come into people's lives through the Gospel.

Much Love,

Slow Week

I have been sitting here for 5 minutes trying to remember what happened this week that is worth telling everyone and I really can't think of anything. It was a slow week.

Here is a link to one of my favorite talks from this past General Conference

Love you all! Hopefully there will be more to tell you next week :)

Tehachapi

Tehachapi is beautiful and cold. It has been raining all this week which has felt super weird since it has probably rained maybe only 3 other times on my mission so far.

Being in a trio companionship has turned out to be super fun! We all get along and so it has been a great first week I think all three of us need each other for various reasons. It is cool to see how the Lord places us with people that are meant to help us in a certain way!

There is also a lot of teaching potential in the area and I can't wait to see what the rest of the transfer has to offer!!

Sorry this email is so short! I love you all!

Goodbye College Heights

Well, this has been quite a week.

First and foremost, I am being TRANSFERRED! After only 7 weeks here in College Heights ward. I was pretty bummed when I heard about it. I've gotten pretty attached to the area in the short time that I've been here. I love the ward and the people we are teaching. And, I will miss our investigator Amelia's baptism! It's next Saturday, so it will be just after I leave. Super sad :( But even though I am sad, I also feel at peace about it. I know that the Lord must need me somewhere else. I am being transferred to Tehachapi, so I will be up in the mountains away from the heat, so that is a tender mercy at least.

Guess who else is getting transferred to Tehachapi? Sister Alderman, my companion! We are both getting transferred together to the same place. So, we will be staying companions. We will also have another companion who is already in Tehachapi, so we will be in a trio. We'll see how that goes....

Other crazy news is that Margie is in the hospital! I hate to leave her like this. She started coughing up blood last Wednesday, so off to the hospital for her. We visited her on Saturday morning and she seemed to be doing alright. She thinks the blood has to do with her Valley Fever (a crazy illness people can get here in Bakersfield. Look it up on Google, it comes from a bacteria that is in the dirt or something, so when people breathe it in they get sick.)

General Conference was also this weekend! If you didn't get a chance to watch it when it aired, all of the talks are available on lds.org. President Monson announced that 4 new temple will be built, which is so exciting!

Anyway, I am stressed because I am trying to pack and say goodbye to everyone and leave lots of notes for the new missionaries that will be coming into our area (we are being replaced by a set of elders, and the ward is sad because they liked having Sister Missionaries.) But it will all be okay! I am way better at packing this transfer than I was last transfer. Probably by the end of my mission I will be a pro at fitting everything into my suitcases.

Love you all!

Finally I am attaching pictures! It only took the whole transfer....These are from when we went to say goodbye to some members that we are really close to. Their daughter Amelia (far right) is getting baptized next Saturday!

Week of Crazy

What a wonderful Easter Week! I hope you all had the chance to reflect on the Atonement and the resurrection of our Savior! What a beautiful thing it is to know that God loves us enough to give us his Son :)

The most exciting and slightly scary thing that happened this week: This Sunday, although it was Easter, was our fast and testimony meeting. So anyone can get up and talk. Including people not from our church. Well, a homeless and probably drunk man got up and told us that he was a follower of Islam and that he had just come to our church to find out what we teach. Then he told us that there was "Only one God! It says it in the scriptures somewhere. I can't remember where....but you can look it up yourselves!" Then he left. I was not that concerned, just a little baffled, but after he left a bunch of men in the congregation got up and followed him out, and everyone was freaking out about it. It seemed to me that he really didn't even know what it meant to be a follower of Islam, that he didn't know his own religion (if that even was his religion.) I also think I'm so used to weird stuff that I don't even realize it's weird anymore.

Also, we witnessed a hobo fight in Frosty King. One Hobo walked in and just randomly attacked the other, yelling something about public indecency. It was interesting.

A funny thing that happened: We were leaving a members house at night. We said "It's time for us to go home!" and their 10-year-old daughter asked, "To the church?" It was so funny! The sweet kid thought that we lived at the church building! :)

On Saturday we had the opportunity to watch Women's Conference, the first official session of General Conference, and it was SO GOOD! Our investigator Margie came and really enjoyed it. The whole thing was about service, and how we need to reach out to those around us with love. The Spirit was so strong, and it was such a blessing to be able to learn from our inspired leaders.

And speaking of General Conference...it is next weekend! I invite all of you to watch it. We live in such a blessed day and age to have an actual prophet of the Lord on the earth who receives revelation specifically for our day. Watch it! It will be amazing!!

I Love you all!

Easter Week

Happy Easter Week!

We had our Easter Program at Church this past Sunday (Even though Easter is next week.) It was amazing! The speakers talked about Christ and the Atonement and the Resurrection. I love this season. One of the speakers talked about how this week before Easter commemorates the most important week in the history of the world. It is the week that Christ entered Jerusalem, had the last supper with his apostles, performed the Atonement in the Garden of Gethsemane, and hung on the cross. Then, three days later, he rose from the dead at the resurrected, glorified Lord and Savior!

The Church has released a video for Easter. You should all go watch it and share it with people!

Our investigator Margie came to church on Sunday and stayed for all 3 hours! She seemed to enjoy herself. We have been texting her scriptures every night for her to read, and she really looks forward to them every day. Her life is kind of crazy and hectic right now, but she recognizes that church is a refuge that brings her peace.

There is a lady in our ward who got baptized last August, and this past Saturday 2 of her sons got baptized as well. The elders in our ward were the ones to teach them, but they invited us to the baptism to do a missionary moment (at convert baptisms here, a set of missionaries always shares the Restoration as part of the service.) It was such a great experience. I could feel the Spirit so strongly as we testified of Christ's church and how it is on the earth again! (We were standing in front of the font, which had overflowed and so the carpet was super wet. By the time we were done my shoes were completely soaked through!)

I am so grateful for this Easter season that we have to celebrate the Atonement of Jesus Christ. I know that Christ lives! Because he lives, each of us can live again as well!

Love you all!

Happy Pie Day!

It is pie day today! Please go enjoy some pie and do some geometry to celebrate! Just kidding, geometry is the worst. Just eat pie.

It has been a week full of...weeding. We always offer people service, and most of the time people say "That's okay! I don't need any help right now!" Well, I don't know what it was about this week, but everyone decided to cash in all at once. And what kind of service did they all need? Weeding. Well, it was pretty fun to weed actually. It is strangely satisfying to pull plants out of the ground by the roots. You can get all your frustrations out on the weeds. But I think I am now good for the rest of the year. No more weed pulling for me or I think I might just start pulling up all the grass as well.

Speaking of weeds, there are weed shops all over the place here in Bakersfield. Medical marijuana is legal here in California, so if you have a card you can literally just go to the store and buy some drugs. In broad daylight. No biggy.

But that is why I am out here I guess, to find the people who are just as confused as I am about the evil that is in the world—the people that are searching for those small rays of light that can pierce through the darkness. And that kind of light can only come from the Gospel!

The Gospel of Jesus Christ is the best thing in the world. I could go on and on, but I really don't have to say much more than that. It is just the best. :)

Also, I found my flash drive, so that's good. Except I still don't have any pictures of my companion and I...we are kind of the worst at taking pictures. But I will try to remember this week!

Have a great Pie Day!
